50 Questions - What's the sickest you've ever been?

About 10 years ago I got something that took me out for about 10 days (I missed a whole week of work, and then the weekends around it were a writeoff as well.) I never went to the doctor because (a) I'm often too lazy, and (b) most of the time you turn out to have a virus and they can't help you anyway, after sitting in the office for hours.

So I don't know what I had, except that a lot of other people at work turned out to have a combination of pneumonia and bronchitis, and that's what my symptoms were like.

I was so weak I could barely make it to the bathroom and back. I had so much congestion in my lungs that at one point I was trying to clear my throat, and it wouldn't clear and I thought I was on the verge of suffocating (I remember clearly, I was standing in front of the fridge.) I was mildly hallucinating--I had this feeling like my body parts had personalities (my noes and my feet.) I cycled through every kind of sick effect--at one point nauseous, then so stuffed up I filled a large garbage bag with kleenex and I had to sleep sitting up, then a throat so sore I couldn't sleep because of the explosion effect, etc.

I have rarely been so miserable in my life. I understood how people can die of having a flu.

The only other time I can remember being physically miserable (I have few childhood memories) was the first day-night after my jaw operation. I was so chronically uncomfortable and nauseous that I couldn't concentrate on anything, which meant I was BOOOORED. Oh my God. Being bored is one of the worst things that can happen to me. I have a great imagination so in most cases I can at least while away the time by floating in a daydream; but if I'm very upset by something, or in pain, I can't do it.

50 Questions - What's your least favorite word?

Most women would put "panties" on the list, myself included. Some sort of universal aversion to having a different word for women's childhood underwear?

50 Questions: What's the best costume you've ever worn?

I recently dressed as a Pride and Prejudice zombie hunter, for a macabre-themed party. (Really, what good is a fencing foil against zombies? But I didn't feel like making a sword.)

But my best "costume" might have been in high school, to a friend's small Halloween party. The previous year I'd had a falling out with a couple friends--or rather they fell out with me. Well pushed, really. Anyway, we were amicable with each other, but didn't hang out anymore.

One of these girls came dressed in a Japanese outfit (yes yes, ethnic costume as costume, naughty-ness -- look, we were just little) -- she was wearing a cheap, shiny, houserobe type kimono.

I, on the other hand, wore a real kimono--a gift to my grandfather from an ambassador, which my grandfather had given to me. I am not ashamed to admit that I took great delight in Oh So Casually lording this fact over her, when she came to compare looks. Especially since she was a very competitive sort.

The only comeback she had was that I'd better not spill anything on it.

BOUAH HA HA HA HAAAAAA!

Sometimes, it's the petty things that mean so much.

(It was a cotton men's kimono, sort of like this one.)

What's the most interesting biography you've read?

I haven't read many, but my clear fave is that of Harpo Marx--the silent, curly-haired Marx Brother. He was a really nice man, and really funny, and hung out with entertaining people (like Alexander Woollcott of the Algonquin Round Table) so it's super entertaining. My brother thought so too. It's the kind of book that leaves you with a lot of favourite stories at the end.

Like his claim that he went to a movie with George Burns, fell asleep during, and Burns ate his entire gigantic bag of black jellybeans; but that Burns claims they fell off his lap, cascaded down the length of the theatre, and caused a huge ruckus.

50 Questions - Where were you when?

I think we need more of the 50 questions, but I'm gonna skip the boring ones.

Where were you on September 11, 2001?

I was working at my present bookstore job. We were doing a remerch, so I was in the business department before store opening, shifting books. A staff member's mom called her son at the store to tell him what she'd just seen on the news. It sounded like a one-off accident at first (a small plane) so we were surprised, but went on working until the news about the second plane came in. Our store is next to a sports bar, so we all got there before the rest of the business lunch crowd, to see what was happening on TV. The bar was totally packed by the time we left. Veddy sad. When I went to bed that night, I kept thinking about people still trapped alive in the rubble.

I was also doing a remerch when Katrina hit, only this time I was doing overnights. Fernando and I had watched a show a year or two before about how if a big enough hurricane ever hit New Orleans, its bowl shape would fill with water and it would be a horrendous disaster. So we both took the warnings really seriously, and were watching CNN constantly. When I went to work Monday night it seemed the worst was over, and when I got home again at 7 AM Fernando told me about the overtoppling of the levees.

I don't remember about Haiti, though. I probably just read about it as I did the daily net-surf. Surfing the Net isn't very memorable, except when the Tsunami hit cause I remember it being early New Years, surfing the net after partying with my peeps.

I wonder what other "where were yous" I have. I was dusting an old person's livingroom during the Oslo accords hand-shaking-on-the-lawn. I think I was in my teenaged bedroom when the shuttle blew up. In my mother's livingroom when I heard about Israel invading Lebanon. What else am I missing?

50 Questions - Bumbling bitterbugs!

Q: Who's your favorite Care Bear?

A: I'll do some Care Bear research, hold on... okay. This will have to be hypothetical cause I was too old to watch the show. Here is the original line-up. I think I'd have to choose Bedtime Bear. I hate going to bed, but I loooove being in bed, and tucking in, and sleeping in, and napping.

• Bedtime Bear is a very sleepy bear. He helps everyone get a good night's sleep and have sweet dreams.

• Birthday Bear wants everyone to have happy birthdays and loves birthday parties and games.
  

• Cheer Bear is a very happy and perky bear, who helps everyone be their happiest and cheer up those who are unhappy.

• Friend Bear is a kind and friendly bear who shows what it means to be a good friend. She is orange with two intertwined smiling flowers on her tummy.

• Funshine Bear loves to play and tell jokes all the time, but sometimes forgets that there are times in life you must be serious.

• Good Luck Bear is all about spreading good luck for everyone.

• Grumpy Bear shows that while it's okay to be grumpy sometimes, it is also silly to let grumpiness go too far. His phrase in the TV series Care Bears: Adventures in Care-a-Lot is "Bumbling Bitterbugs!"

• Love-a-Lot Bear is a bear who helps spread love and help it along wherever she goes.

• Tenderheart Bear helps everyone show and express their feelings and helps his fellow Care Bears be the most caring they can be.

Q: What was your most recent trip of more than 50 miles?

A: Okay first of all I have no concept of that 50 miles is. Not because I'm Canadian, but because I'm dyscalculiac. I can picture one foot because I have feet. But I can't picture a mile or a kilometer. I'll do some research and be back.

Okay Mtl to Ottawa is 100 miles, and a 2 hour drive. So I guess it's on hour of driving.

A: Hrm. I have a favourite TV judge! (Amy) But otherwise I haven't watched a lot of legal shows.

Q: What's your favorite school supply?

A: Hm, that's a hard one. In elementary school, it would have been smelly markers. My friend M. eventually owned the biggest set, and I had much envy.

In high school, it was the agenda. I would cut out a picture from a magazine to paste over the front, and maybe some pictures inside. I would then dig out favourite quotations and pepper them throughout. And buy coloured paper clips to divide and decorate it. It was very fun.

Fresh spiral notebooks are cool too, though. They bespeak of the endless possibilities (outside of schoolwork.)

And today at work we got in pencils shaped like drumsticks.

A: The Gallery of Regrettable Food. It's a site where a guy posts photos from horrid mostly-brand-name 50s cookbooks, with very funny captions. When my friend got hitched a few years ago, I was mostly excited because I finally had someone to whom I could gift the book version.

Have I ever? There was a time in high school when I started churchifying and wanted to stop swearing. I swore like Eddie Murphy, so this was a big accomplishment. My school friends went along with me--we used the word banana instead. It amoozed us.

I can't remember the occurrence, because I've gone entire nights without sleep so many times. My first one was at a friend's sleepover party--we stayed up all night, and I probably went to bed in the late morning when I returned home.
