All the "get rich on the internet" schemes are based on this concept: how to rank high in Google (so that you get more hits on your site, and then more affiliate revenue). Except I had to wade through all kinds of junky blogs and web sites where everyone speaks an "insider" language, to understand what the hoo they were talking about; you can just read it in a nice simplified NY Times article. ;-)
And here's a blogger who's getting out of the linking business. Harder to understand cause he's all lingo-ized.

There was a big lawsuit a couple decades ago over a similar issue as it relates to airline booking websites for travel agents. American Airlines was/is? the owner of the biggest system (Saber? or something like that) and it was programmed to show all the AA flights on the first pages. Some airlines actually figure this contributed to their bankruptcy. AA was brought up on charges of illegal competition or something like that, but I don't know how it all settled out.
