My Day - Jeeeesus Chriiiiist Suuuuperstaaaaar!

My friend took me to the Ted Neeley Jesus Christ Superstar today--he was the original movie Jesus. My friend Banana (she used to be Super Banana and I was Super Pickle, in high school) and her boyfriend buy tickets to shows way in advance, and then if either doesn't want to go they invite a friend instead. Quel treat!

I loved it all, it was really great. Neeley acting and singing were also great, except for his age. Neither of us could get used to a 60 year old Jesus. When Judas and Jesus were fighting, it didn't feel like a couple brothers fighting, but rather a son rebelling against his father.

Also, they introduced this strange stage direction throughout, where Jesus is constantly carrying on conversations with God, under his breath. God appeared to be sitting in the balcony. Neeley would look out at the balcony and make hand gestures and mouth words while the singing was going on around him.

Combining his age and his mouthing, he started to look like the crazy old uncle. Which brought a totally different feel to Mary patting his head and singing "Everything's all right now... crazy old uncle. Lie down and stop embarrassing yourself." Let's just say, zero romantic tension.

Banana and I talked about this at intermission; so the next time Jesus started mouthing away, we glanced at each other, and had to stifle our laughter. Then neither of us dared look at the other for the rest of the performance.

We were similarly in sync when we saw the movie version of Phantom. When Christine arrives at Phanty's lair and Gerard Butler starts his horrid caterwauling, Banana and I looked at each other and burst out laughing.

Anyway, a splendid time was had by all, as usual. Conversation always flows easily with the Banana.

This sounds like the weirdest production of Jesus Christ Superstar ever.

Oh, and the Phantom movie is very, very laugh-worthy, yes.
