Race and the Vegan and the Cow and the Starving African Child

Race intersects with veganism...

Someone on livejournal made this vegan advocacy poster (which I think is offensive/racist.)

Vegans of Color posted this reply.

And debate ensued at the original livejournal post. Though not much of a debate. Mostly consisted of various people trying to get the original poster to understand why the image is offensive, and the original poster persisting in obtuse-atude.

But at least one person in that vegan group was interested to learn more about this Intersection, and posted it as a topic. Which started with some good answers, and then devolved into a I'm-poor-and-I'm-a-vegan thread.

Just because someone can afford to own a computer with internet access and cut/paste ability, doesn't mean they should use it. sheesh....

Also, if you're going to advocate for something, it should be clear to people who aren't super-invested in The Cause *what* your advocacy poster means. I had no idea what it was supposed to mean until I went to the analysis at Vegans of Color. It was not at all clear to me that it had something to do with the meat industry (And it's ill-informed since that's what it is since, as you've noted, veganism is a diet that is mostly possible only in a rich country.). Also, is the author of the poster against having and feeding pets since pet food, too, involves processing food that does not go to sub-Saharan Africa? And overeating and Christmas? What about drinking beer (that diverts lots of grain)? I dunno... Sometimes I think the *loudest* proponents of veganism only care about global inequality when it suits animal rights.

It took me a minute to *get* the poster as well, and many other commenters also mentioned that it's too obscure.

When you read the whole thread and the one after it, he(?) comes off as very ignorant and totally unwilling to learn A Thing. None of those points you raise would have occurred to him.
