and now we all live free

celebrate the love.

I didn't see anything about elections in those lyrics. Must be why I hate that song. YUB NUB!!

John Barry is dead! Oh noes!

Sadness. James Bond soundtracks have been a great delight in my life. Sooo much great music, I can;t pick faves. But I thought I'd at least post the slightly-lesser-known themes:

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

007 (From Russia With Love) - sounds like a cowboy song, so cool

My fave Bond movie, and Bond soundtrack, is A View to a Kill. The Duran Duran theme song was written by the boys and Barry, and I love it. Barry then played off it to great effect in the movie, such as in the love theme:

He also scored some other lovely soundtrack pieces, my fave being The Cotton Club.

I picked up the soundtrack to The Cotton Club when I was in my teens or early 20s, never having seen the movie, and LOVED it. Then... I saw the movie. Holy crap. With emphasis on the word "crap."

Kanye West's Monster... with muppets

Kanye's video for "Monster" has been leaked and is mildly controversial because it's full of women's corpses. (Well the song is called "Monster.") But just in case it offends, here's the muppet version, which Kanye tweeted about.

"You just wanna be on the side that's winning"

Here's my song for the day. Quel great songwriter, le Bob Dylan. His original version isn't on youtube (which means the record company must be blocking it), and neither is my fave cover. But here's a great cover by Simply Red.  UPDATE: I found the Bryan Ferry cover, which is a lot different, but I also like.

Positively 4th Street

You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that’s winning

You say I let you down
You know it’s not like that
If you’re so hurt
Why then don’t you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that’s not where it’s at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You’re in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I’d make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don’t know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, “How are you?” “Good luck”
But you don’t mean it

When you know as well as me
You’d rather see me paralyzed
Why don’t you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I’d rob them

And now I know you’re dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don’t you understand
It’s not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is
To see you

Testing: Youtube playlists

Just testing what a youtube playlist looks like, and works, once embedded. In prep for my Best of 2010 music list. (This playlist is one I'd already made awhile back... just random party music.)

Programs to Analyze Music in iTunes

I'm trying out a couple itunes analyzers, to see how useful they might be. Beatunes you have to pay for, I'm trying the free 14 days--it corrects artist names and such. It didn't find that many mistakes, though, cause I keep my library pretty clean (that is I correct inconsistencies as I see them, cause they annoy me.)

iTunes Statistician wasn't really helpful.

But I'm having fun with Super Analyzer. Many of the stats aren't helpful because I've reloaded my library (and changed computers) over the years. But here are two funny charts: (click on them to see them bigger.)

Get the impression I like love songs?

Get an idea of what time I go to bed, when I get up, and at what time I start my creative pursuits for the day? (That's usually when I listen to music.)

Music - Tracking my best of's

I'm working on my music best-of list for 2010, but it's much harder than the books because there are sooo many more. But also, the methods for tracking them aren't very reliable.

iTunes tracks when you acquired a song, but if you re-upload it then it gets a new date. I occasionally rebuild my library, and I eventually turn all my songs to mp3s so they take up less space, which also reloads them. Then all the stats (# of times played) disappear as well. So when I try to track which songs I acquired this year, and how often I listened to them, it's a mess.

I also use lastfm.com but I don't know exactly how it tracks these things either. Eg. it says I listened to Bette Midler's "Beast of Burden" 9 times this year, but that sounds very low to me.

Plus you can't go strictly by # of times played, because a song I bought and loved in October will still have a smaller play count than a song I bought and loved in February.

MEEPS.

I'm also trying to compile my fave songs that came out before 2010--songs I played a lot this year, or just discovered, or always had in my head. I only have 450 songs that were made in 2010, but leaves 11 001 that weren't.

I tried creating a playlist for each month of uploading, minus the 2010 songs, but I hit a month with hundreds of songs in it--which I'm sure were re-uploads. So that was only so much help.

It's all vair vair confusing. I've got to figure out a better way to do this in the new year, for next year's list.

Kanye on Saturday Night Live: "Power"

Kaaanyeeeee... meesa loooobe yoooou! I hadn't seen this performance from back in October. Eez very wow.

Fave line: "They said I was the abomination of Obama's nation."
Second favourite line: "I was drinking earlier. Now I'm driving." (Presumably a line about his career, rather than a message about drinking and driving.)

(The lyrics in this performance are a bit different than those below... because he omitted the part where he tells SNL to fuck off.)

I'm livin' in the 21st century
Doin' something mean to it
Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it
Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it
I guess every superhero need his theme music
No one man should have all that power
The clock's tickin', I just count the hours
Stop trippin', I'm trippin' off the power
(21st century schizoid man)
The system broken, the schools closed, the prisons open
We ain't got nothin' to lose, ma'f-cka, we rollin'
Huh? Ma'f-cka, we rollin'
With some light-skinned girls and some Kelly Rowlands
In this white man's world, we the ones chosen
So goodnight, cruel world, I see you in the mornin'
Huh? I see you in the mornin'
This is way too much, I need a moment
No one man should have all that power
The clock's tickin', I just count the hours
Stop trippin', I'm trippin' off the power
'Til then, f-ck that, the World's ours
And then they (Go)
And then they
And then they (Go)
And then they (21st century schizoid man)
F-ck SNL and the whole cast
Tell 'em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass
More specifically, they can kiss my asshole
I'm an asshole? You n-ggas got jokes
You short-minded n-ggas' thoughts is Napoleon
My furs is Mongolian, my ice brought the goalies in
Now I embody every characteristic of the egotistic
He know, he so, f-ckin' gifted
I just needed time alone, with my own thoughts
Got treasures in my mind but couldn't open up my own vault
My childlike creativity, purity and honesty
Is honestly being prodded by these grown thoughts
Reality is catchin' up with me
Takin' my inner child, I'm fighting for it, custody
With these responsibilities that they entrusted me
As I look down at my dia-mond-encrusted piece
N-gga, no one man should have all that power
The clock's tickin', I just count the hours
Stop trippin', I'm trippin' off the power
'Til then, f-ck that, the World's ours
And then they (Go)
And then they
And then they (Go)
And then they
And then they (Go)
And then they (21st century schizoid man)
Colin Powells, Austin Powers
Lost in translation with a whole f-ckin' nation
They say I was the obamanation (abomination) of Obama's nation
Well, that's a pretty bad way to start the conversation
At the end of day, goddammit, I'm killin' this sh-t
I know damn well y'all feelin' this sh-t
I don't need yo' p-ssy, bitch, I'm on my own d-ck
I ain't gotta power trip, who you goin' home with?
How 'Ye doin'? I'm survivin'
I was drinkin' earlier, now I'm drivin'
Where the bad bitches, huh? Where ya hidin'?
I got the power, make yo' life so excitin' (So excitin')
Now this would be a beautiful death
Jumpin' out the window
Lettin' everything go
Lettin' everything go
N-now-now this would be a beautiful death
Jumpin' out the window
Lettin' everything go
Lettin' everything go
Now this would be a beautiful death
Jumpin' out the window
Lettin' everything go
Lettin' everything go
You got the power to let power go

internets i hate you

Oh God now I started re-reading those old stories about Romanian orphanages. Now resorting to the "comedy" label in my iTunes, cause I feel sick to my stomach.

... what are your overheads?? ... she's deaaaad (she's not dead!) ... lalalalalaaa something eeeelse... don't forget about jobs! ... MC Escher that's my favourite MC ...

Okay, feeling a little better.

42 679

Okay my candle-of-the-day is almost burnt out. I had some long dry spells because I had to think up some important plot points--since these 50 000 words are going to be part of the novel I'm working on, I can't put down just any old crap. I don't mind if I write stuff that I later decide will need changing, but I need to make the best momentary decisions I can.

When I did this same story two nanos ago, the goal was just to get a bare bones backstory worked out for my heroine, so all I needed to do was generate ideas. Now that I'm re-writing it, and it's going to actually go into my book, it's got to be a fully workable draft.

Anyway, I got past some of the humps, and I think the last 8000 words should come easier-ish. I've left my heroine in the California Hospital in LA, the Jacobs are about to flee to Europe, and Pearl is going to bring about the next important plot point. We're just getting into the thick of the stuff that will drive my Henry V character several generations later. Yay! I can safely get to bed, then.

(Look, once I got around 39 000 words my progress bar went from yellow to green. So cute!)

KITTY PICS: Minion Helps With Word Count

"Hm yes. You definitely need some padding."

"I put big bum on keyboard."

Song of the Day: There's another Canadian Justin! I better one! -> Justin Nozuka "Swan in the Water." No idea how this song got into my library--must have been an iTunes song of the week that I downloaded and then ignored.

I loved this soundtrack

Was probably my first real exposure to good rap music. John Singleton and Spike Lee always had the best soundtracks. But I can't listen to these songs for long cause they remind me of the movie (Boyz N the Hood) and then I get all sad. And then I have to think about how gorgeous Lawrence Fishburne was in that movie, and that makes me happy. Also I wish my name was Furious Styles.

Who'd have thunk it?

Hm. I wouldn't have guessed that Fall Out Boy would sound better done by a very big band full of 50 year old guys. (Except for the background vocals, which I don't care for.)
