There was one line in the book that I liked, however. It's from another burn victim, speaking to our hero:
"And just when you start thinking that you've accepted who you are, that changes too. Because who you are is not permanent."
I like that. Not in a burn patient way, but for anyone. I'm not sure if I think it's true, but it's an interesting, thought-provoking line. The only one in the book.

Re "who you are is not permanent": I mean, people change and grow, and I don't think I'm exactly the same person I was ten years ago, or even three years ago. What I don't like about what I'm reading about it is this "seeking personal redemption" narrative. More on this in below thread.
There's some self-conscious treatment of the convention of "personal redemption" in the book, it's not done uncritically. I do think the author ultimately fails, though.
But for that quote, I just liked it in and of itself.
