Feeeeed meeeeeee

Ahhh! The beast demanded payment! In the form of a book about Georgette Heyer's Regency, and five books from the $9.99 table! Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!

The Regency book I bought has a different cover. Looking at this cover now... I suspect I already own it! May need to return.

Alright, I give up. I'll read the damn Kite Runner.

Wasn't originally drawn to this one, but I'd never looked at the plot before. Looks interesting.

I have another Waters book I haven't read yet; but someone at work said his wife raves about this one.

Possibly a too-white-perspective book judging by some reviews. But I still nurse a secret fantasy that one day I will teach a post-colonial humanities class, and get to use all books.

time for lolcats

I'm gonna get out a heeeaah!

All the plans are finalized, I can now book myself standby on some flights. My daddyio is a retired airline pilot, so I usually go standby except when I can't afford to miss a flight, like when I went to London.

But most times I just plan for one flight, but with a couple more possibilities in case I miss it. And if I get to the airport early, then I can try to move to an earlier flight.

The only key flight will be my first, because Gilby is picking me up at the airport and then we're off to Stratford for an 8 PM musical. But he works close to the airport, so I can call him when I arrive; and there's a flight every hour, so I've got a couple tries to get it right.

As Scottie would say: It's excitin'! Three more days of work, and then Packing Day, and then I'm off. Loo loo loooooo!

Mabel's VeganEats post renovations

I've been playing a lot of Cafe World this past month. I wanted to earn enough money to expand my cafe to the limit, and then decorate. (It's all about the redecorating.) I just finally was able to afford the last of my glass tables, so I'm pretty much done. Not that I won't come back and decorate some more--I've got $20 virtual cash burning in my virtual pocket--but it's time for a break. (Unless Fernando lets me redecorate his cafe... meh heh heh. I already go in and change his avatar's outfit when he's not looking.)

Here's my cafe:

Here are the three mini themes in Mabel's VeganEats:

And here are two of my favourite things. When you fire a waiter, you get to see Pouting Guy. He's so cute. If firing people was really this cute, it would be a dangerously tempting activity.

And here's my favourite visitor. There's a pretty good racial mix in the people generated by the program, but Happy Guy is my favourite. Cause he's just... so happy.

Feeding the beast

So my main argument for getting an e-reader has always been: It'll enable me to hide my book addiction better.

And it's woooorkiiiing.

Every couple weeks kobo sends out $1 or $2 coupons for lists of books. And with the latest one, I just realized that the coupon applies to every book in the store except the publishers listed in the small print. So I can get a discount on all sorts of books! And they're discounted to begin with, so très cheap.

I caved and bought four books. Now I've got lots of new toys to read! 3 lite-n-fluffy, and one research.

Murder at Longbourn, by Tracy Kiely, turned out to be everything I had hoped it would be--a cozy mystery with strong tie-ins to P&P but without being an overly serious, self-conscious, joyless retelling of the story. The novel is jam-packed with Austen quotes and references to the various movies and adaptations that constitute Austen Inc. ...but branches out a bit to include Shakespeare, Dorothy Parker, Oscar Wilde and other literary wits. (Goodreads reader review)

This book has it all; an eternal love, a broken marriage, a life cut short, children in peril and a Gothic castle. In Ohio. (Goodreads reader review)

Clever plot, unusual subject (stamp collecting), interesting setting and time, and amusing characters flesh out this funny little mystery. Flavia is a smart and snarky little detective whose passion is poison. (Goodreads reader review) "There are times, Miss de Luce... when you deserve a brass medal. And there are other times when you deserve to be sent to your room with bread and water." (Inspector Hewitt to Flavia de Luce)

A groundbreaking report on how Seagram heir Edgar Bronfman, Jr, who lost $3 billion in failed deals, may be the record business's least-likely savior.
